Lead Design / Civil Engineer: Ardurra (with Nelson Byrd Woltz, Walter P. Moore, Freese & Nichols, etc.)
Project Overview
The Memorial Park Central Connector is a transformative initiative aimed at reuniting Houston’s iconic Memorial Park, which has long been divided by Memorial Drive. As part of the city’s ten-year master plan, the project installed two land bridges over Memorial Drive, restoring continuity between the north and south sides of the park and renewing the area with added green space, native landscaping, trail connectivity, and ecological enhancements.
Featuring dramatic design elements—including four concrete arches spanning the roadway—and environmentally sensitive site work (such as balancing cut and fill to avoid external hauling), the project stood out as a high-visibility public infrastructure and landscape urban development effort.
The project was completed in early 2023 and was honored with an ENR Texas & Louisiana “Best Project Award — Landscape/Urban Development (Award of Merit)” for its sustainability, design excellence, and integration with the city’s vision.
Reytec’s Role & Contribution
While Reytec was not the general contractor for the full scope, the company played a focused and critical role in specific civil and utility works that supported the overall project’s success. Among Reytec’s contributions:
- Utility tie-ins, trenching, and concrete drive/roadway reconstruction segments within the Memorial Drive corridor, ensuring seamless interface with the land bridge structures and adjacent park roadways.
- Coordination with Tellepsen and the design team to sequence work around heavy public access, permit constraints, and infrastructure conflicts—demonstrating Reytec’s ability to operate within complex, high-profile environments.
- Restoration work and landscaping support, ensuring that disturbed areas immediately adjacent to Reytec’s civil scope were rehabilitated to match the park’s design aesthetics and environmental criteria.
- Close collaboration on scheduling and quality control to meet the demanding standards and finish expectations of the architect, structural engineers, and park conservancy stakeholders.
Reytec’s part, though a subset of the total contract, illustrates the company’s ability to integrate with ambitious, multidisciplinary public projects and deliver critical infrastructure work in a manner consistent with world-class design expectations.
Significance & Takeaways
The Memorial Park Central Connector is an iconic project that not only connects communities physically but also symbolically by bridging built infrastructure and natural space. For Reytec, participating in this project reinforces our capability to support landmark civic projects, integrate into high-stakes, budget-driven environments, and coordinate with leading design and construction teams. This work underscores Reytec’s reputation for precision, sensitivity to urban and ecological contexts, and adaptability in delivering infrastructure within visionary urban landscapes.
